In her TED talk, climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe encourages us to talk about climate change through shared values and the things that matter in our everyday lives.
Start with common ground
Think about something you both care about: family, your neighborhood, time outdoors, or a favorite place. A conversation can begin there without becoming a debate.
Make it personal and local
Share an experience rather than a pile of statistics. Ask what the other person has noticed, and listen. Local stories can make a big topic feel closer to home.
Leave room for possibility
Talk about solutions alongside challenges: cleaner transport, less food waste, healthier neighborhoods, or a community project. Hope is more useful when it has something practical attached to it.
An easy conversation starter
“I’ve been thinking about how we could make our neighborhood healthier. What’s one change you’d love to see?” You don’t need to have all the answers to start connecting.
